Massage Envy

When it comes to massage, the Chinese know what they’re doing.  You don’t have to look far find a massage spa.  They are classy, professional, and very inexpensive (no happy endings, get your head out of the gutter).  We had been getting one once a month, but recently found a spa that has the best massages I’ve had yet, but also the cheapest at $9 for an hour.  We’ve decided to make this a weekly occurrence.   There are some things here in China that very normal to Chinese, like massages, a cleaning lady, or a nanny that also cooks and cleans, that are luxuries back home.  We know we won’t be able to indulge in these types of things forever, so we’re going to enjoy them while they are still in our budget.  Besides, we work hard all week, and don’t spend our money on much…I’m not sure who I’m trying to justify this to, me or you.

Here’s what you can find at your typical spa:

A variety of massages, but the most common is the ‘foot massage’.  Now, this fooled me the first time I got one.  A 70 minute foot massage?  That seems like an unnecessary amount of time.  But, once again, I was mistaken.  This is no ordinary foot massage.  Let me explain: first, you soak your feet in scented water (rose is very typical-also, they line the bucket or tub with a plastic bag, so it’s all very sanitary).

You sit on a very soft ottoman while the massuese massages your shoulders, neck, and back (with clothes on, duh).  Second, you turn around and lean back in an overstuffed arm chair while they massage your head.  That is my favorite part.  Now, when I talk about professional, they use some amazing techniques, including ones that my chiropractor used to use to help me with migraines.  Third, they massage your feet and legs for the last half hour or so, while I usually fight sleep, but one can drink tea, watch tv, or chat with your friends.  Many of the spas have private rooms and open rooms with up to eight massage chairs.  For whatever reason, and without asking, I’m always given a private room.  No complaints there!  It also seems you can hang out in the room after the massage with a very lenient time limit.  I haven’t been kicked out yet!

I was thinking about successful this type of spa would be back in the States.  I can just see a group of ladies, bridal shower, birthday parties, whatever, all getting massages, chatting, and drinking tea or wine.  And Brad assured me that it would be just as appealing to men.  Maybe I could be on to something…

We have yet to get a ‘blind massage’.  It is a very popular form of massage and it’s performed by blind masseuses.  They are thought to be the best because they have a heightened sense of touch and therefore can provide better massages.  However, I also hear they can be quite painful, but I’m always assured you will feel amazing the next day.  I’m a little weary, but someday I’m sure I’ll try it.
